Without reading that entire thread my impression is this.
The cows were in the cornfield, the owner of the cows admitted that. That's direct damage caused by the cows. Thus the owner of the cows is responsible for the damage they caused.

How do you prove that the actions of the church caused the problems at the dairy? We are led to beleive that they did, and it is very likely that they did but how do you prove it? I beleive that is where the problem lies regarding collecting from the church. An attorney should be engaged to review the FACTS of the situation, to review the policies in force and render an opinion as to who, if anyone, has legal responsibility for the damage.
The money involved is pocket change. I say move on and focus the energy on preventing this from happening again.
