southern MN | I posted about my local coop here a couple years ago.....
Got an email from one of the directors a day later.
Two coops are overlap a bit here, I'm a mile from one, 5 miles from the other. Last winter the basis was consistantly 10-15 cents higher on the coop that had rail access to the PNW. The other coop is heavily associated with an ethanol plant. Maybe 10 years ago, the non-rail coop was paying 2-3 cents higher because of the ethanol.
Probably goes around & comes around. But, it is frustrating, I'll sure grant you that! :) And, dad went through his share of bad managers in various coops (most not around any more) so it can be an issue.
I think it is very difficult for a coop to represent both sides of a commodity. Buying from a farmer, selling to an ethanol plant it owns shares in, grinding feed for hog barns it owns a stake in.....
Who gets the best deal, the best representation? Not really a coop in the good sense when they get so multi-sided. Can't make the owners happy, as each owner has different goals.
