Minot, ND
equipment wise that is. Just trying to pencil it out on how much money it would take to buy everything from drill/planter, tractor, combine, semi/trailer, etc.

without a huge profit per acre i was thinking you would be better to own everything especially in tougher years then trying to hire it done. whats it cost to custom harvest per acre plus trucking? $30 dollars an acre? if markets drop is the price of custom harvesting really going to drop as price of equipment and fuel is still going to be up there. guess thinking out loud that if you can buy a combine and header for 15k /30 = 500. so 500 acres would pay for the combine and header, and yes i realize that you could writeoff all the custom charges that year. but lets say wheat goes down to 3 dollars which its very well possible in the next 5 yrs. that would be 10 bushels that you would have to give to the custom harvester before you see anything on a field that would possibly avg 40-50 bushels a acre.

so just wondering what you guys think to buy all the equipment needed to farm from field tillage to trucking.
