Subject: Row water guys help please.

This is first year to irrigate. We leveled some land and we are row watering with poly pipe. We are extremely dry and trying to catch up with the water. Just got last well running today. Do not expect top yield now, but it will help while the rest of crop (dryland) dies.

Questions:

1) Biggest problem is that when we poke a hole the water runs down the furrow fine for about ten minutes, then a hole washes out and builds a silt dam in the furrow. Then the water backs up and finds another row to follow. Usually most of the water will wind up in the tractor tracks and will leave alot of un-watered rows. Of course we take a shovel and clean the silt, but it keeps on coming. We have one well that has been running for a month and have fought this all along. I thought it would firm up after a watering or two. What are the tricks to this problem?

2) How is the best way to get water to the end (1/4 mile) of the row? We have tried running 36 hours with 3/4 and 1 inch holes. Just today we poked two 7/8 holes per row. This is 30 gallons/row/minute. It is flooding the area next to the pipe, but it is movinge on toward the end as well. We hope 24 hours will get the the end. This is about 10 inches of water per acre. Am I messing up?

Thanks
Don
