I say that a trencher smears the sidewall of the trench as well. That wheel constantly smearing the sidewall is part of the deal, imo. I use a plow. I'm sure that sidewall smearing is part of that deal also. I don't know how big of a problem it is though. You need to get the tile in the ground, one way or another.

One thing I have noticed when making connection to a line that was wheeled in, years ago, that the dirt that was disturbed in the trench seems to be still packed abit compared to the virgin soil next to the trench.
