Subject: RE: Farm strike 1978

E. Kansas
The AAM was gaining quite a bit of following by the fall of 1977 "here". There were several meetings locally about what they were representing and doing. Around the weekend of December 10 there was a big rally in Topeka. My dad drove one of our grain trucks to Topeka on Friday afternoon in time for a large meeting with Bob Dole that evening. Dole found out rather quickly at that meeting that he wasn't getting any crowd support by saying things contrary to the reason the rally was being held. He was boo'd at different times. There was a big parade to the Capitol in downtown Topeka on Saturday and it was an awfully cold day. Lots of tractors and trucks there and a big rally followed.

In January 1978, there was an AAM rally in Washington DC. Farmers locally chartered a bus to there. Lots of tractors in DC then too. On the way home, the bus got stranded in Indianapolis for 2 days because of a huge blizzard. The AAM meetings continued on that year ahead of the next DC rally and tractorcade.
