NW Iowa | I've had barn steel on the house roof for 14 years and it still looks like new but I used #1 steel. I nailed 2x4 furring strips on top of the shingles and screwed the steel down to the furring strips. Did all the work myself on the single story roof but had help pulling the sheets up on the second story roof. At that time steel was a little more expensive than shingles when the cost of the trim was factored in. The tall part of the house had three layers of shingles so if i would have gone back with shingles the old shingles would have had to be stripped off and new sheeting laid down. I looked that part of the roof over well and figured it was strong enough to put the steel on top of the shingles and so far it has not sagged. I haven't been back up on that roof in the 14 years since I installed it and I don't plan to ever be back up there again. | |
