I too wonder if he cares.

Rural communities don't carry the percentage of the vote that they use to, but farmers still have a lot of sway, far greater than their percentage of population. Part of that is because a lot of people who live in suburbs admire farmers, country music is the most popular form of music and there are boatloads of people who want to retire in their 50's and move to a farm and do small time for extra income and hunt and fish and whatnot. The other part is farmers donate lots of money to campaigns. A number of farmers anymore are really upper middle and even upper class people. They are more likely to pay attention to politics and more likely to give money than the average voter; in addition to being more likely to actually vote.

Trump does not admire the rural life like a good number of suburbanites. He is a New Yorker, he loves the urbane and the city. He also did not do much fundraising and did not feel ag's outsized financial contributions.

Like I said, I too wonder if he really appreciates or cares.
