The first time I ran a combine it was the newly acquired New Holland 1500 in 1981 cutting wheat. It may not have been the exact first time I ran it but I was cutting wheat on a farm we had just bought and suddenly the whole machine shut down. I got out and there was a steam cloud coming out of the engine compartment. Turned out the water pump bearing went out on the 3208 Cat engine and with little clearance the fan blades went two cores deep into the radiator. That was just the first of a series of problems for that lemon colored machine. It left three years later for a John Deere 6600. In fact, while it was down they loaned us an even older gas 6600, so I guess the New Holland dealership was telling us that we should have gone with our first instinct!

Haha my 1st combine was a 1500 that I bought when I was 15. I had NO clue how a combine worked or how to fix one. I also didn't know that the new holland dealer didn't care to stock parts or work on them. I learned A LOT about mechanics and making dumb financial decisions that summer!

I wonder how many of those miserable machines New Holland even sold?
