East central Iowa, Camanche, Iowa | However, we are in a battle for the survival of an industry that takes what many believe to be better utilized as food for the starving populace of the world and making fuel out of it. Those that hold to that mindset ignore the value of the byproducts that are produced to feed livestock supplying the populace with a more complete and denser protein source.
In the early part of the 20th century the Hurst empire destroyed the hemp industry through a series of newspaper stories about the evils of the misuse of hemp to protect it's investment in the wood pulp industry that supplied paper for it's newspapers. Hemp made a superior paper product and Hurst knew that if allowed to proliferate the hemp industry would make paper made from wood pulp of little value. Hurst was successful in changing the mindset of an entire nation not to protect people from the dangers of pot but rather to protect it's investment in wood pulp.
The ethanol industry could very well end up like hemp or more recently coal if it does not learn to be on the offensive as well as aggressively defend against false accusations in a timely manner.
