SE Iowa | Used to grow wheat for manure ground and straw for hogs. Was always told to wait on N app. If you don't make tracks in the green wheat you are too early. If there is free manure available in the area (any farmer in a pinch for somewhere to spread full pits), you could build up organic matter rather quickly and turn the farm around. Some of my best corn has been on my poorest farm that received what many would consider an over app of hog manure over the years. Manure easily replaces straw removal nutrients. Wheat likes DRY weather. Disaster this year, vomitoxin, low T.W., low yield. Straw bales were $4 this past winter. Have gotten over 100 bales an acre on low cut wheat. | |
