Coaldale, Alberta, Canada

Don't know if this helps, but we went the other way. Cut way back on inputs, grow old varieties that stand on their own with no fungicide, use a good rotation, no seed treatment, nothing synthetic. So far has worked well (organic situation)) but even for the conventional guys, I think we push yield often without really looking at the cost. Theoretically, if I were to apply fungicide, it better pay back 3 to one, I am the one taking the weather risk (hail, drought, other issues at harvest, etc), also the 1/2 to 1% lost by tromping through the crop again. Higher inputs to get higher yields need higher levels of crop insurance, etc. We focused on cutting costs without cutting yields back to much, not really interested in working for the chem. companies or the coop or bragging rights at the coffee shop.
