| Here is what works for me 30 miles south of St. Paul/Minneapolis.
Stalks are sized via a chopper corn head and stalk stompers (mostly to protect tires). I try to avoid planting over last years roots/crowns. I like to be about 7"- 10" off the row. I just use floating row cleaners with down pressure added to keep them from riding up over the residue as easily. I have spiked closing wheels which helps vs the rubber wheels, particularly if the ground is a little wet. Some in the area use one standard and one spiked closing wheel with good results. I'm using 125 lb of down pressure on the row unit.
