I suspect the day is coming when government zoning laws are going to be needed to protect needed
productive farm land from development.
Day is coming? I think that ship has sailed for too much good land already.
My family farmed in the Willamette Valley for over 100 years. For the same sort of reasons that the OP mentions, we left. I'm sure at the time the decision was hard, now looking back it's easy to see that moving was a good thing to do. You just have to pick somewhere you like and go.
