I just bought the $99. Sync and plugged existing hard drives via a usb port. If you just want to keep all your files on both the desktop and also on the laptop then you do not even need an external hard drive. If you want to use the shared file feature and stor your files on the transporter then you need a separate hard drive or buy one of the transporters with a hard drive on it. For what you are doing I would just get the sync and add my own hard drive if you decide you want it.
