My formal education was some time ago.  I do recall reading John Law, an author and financier influential in Europe at that time (also John Locke and David Hume.)  I may interest you in The Great Upheaval: America and the Birth of the Modern World, 1788-1800.  It goes into much detail about the French Revolution and how it influenced our own history.
