Subject: RE: Question for anyone is the seedcorn industry

North Central Iowa
It comes down to the advancement people first. They decide what gets advanced to go commercial. Then those products usually get put in front of the dsm/sales reps and they develop their sales plans. The production plants only have so many acres of production to work with so they have to use the dsm/sales reps plans to determine what hybrids are produced on the seed corn acres. If the advancement people or the reps make a bad call they could potentially get stuck with a crappy product(s) in their inventory. The other thing to watch for is area/district boundary lines. If you are close to a sales boundary line there could be a huge difference in products estimated when a county line is crossed even if the soil types for the area are the same. The reps who are really good at estimating look at all the trait scores and request a wide range of products to spread their risk and the seed customers risk. That being said its still like looking in a crystal ball. The best thing you can do as a customer is to get a hold of a product catalog or look online and study all the products inside and out in your maturity range. Several times I've spotted good products that fit our acres that we wouldn't have known about otherwise.
