Pay it off. Then you own it. Thats always a good thing. Nobody can take that way from you since you now own it.
They sure can! It is impossible to completely own land. You always have to pay rent (property tax) or uncle Sam will relieve you of your property. Pretty sad that even if you own your home free and clear, you still need a source of income just to stay on your land.
