I'm sure 2nd ear may add some minor amount to final yields but more important is uniform and even stands.

I had 108 degrees yesterday in the tractor cab.. my wife said she saw 110 in the car temp.. and yes usually these gauges are too high due to engine heat etc.... Weatherman said 106.. so pick your number but IT WAS HOT this past week.. with several days over 100 accompanied with steady to high winds.. basically BLOWTORCH conditions...

So I went out to document the damage done.. and we did fry some corn mostly the southern exterior exposed edges and sandy knolls.. suppose to cool down this week.. I wasn't going to add on the multi ear debate.. but found several with 2 and some trying to shoot a 3rd..  HA!

However, like Von said above.. Agronomist always told us that was a sign of too few plants planted.. UNIFORMITY and EVEN stands are the key..  This patch was planted at 16 k,,  and fertilized for.. 100 bu. These came from my first field planted.. and was TOO DRY.. I had to go just about 2" deep to put into moisture.. so emergence and hence stand was impacted.. not perfect.. but as you can hopefully see..  The results.. It does have multi ears..

This patch was not as bad as I expected.. maybe the drought gene is working...???

Anywho.. as Von's 2nd pic shows.. YIELD comes from uniformity.. and GRAIN FILL.. imho.. which is still ahead of us..  Maybe the sorghum fields will still catch the dryland corn fields this year..??
