It might take a little bit more time but it certainly doesn't need to take more money or equipment.  For several years we sidedressed 1,200 acres of corn a year with a 12 row NH3 bar that we had less than $1,000 invested in and we were saving 30# of N per acre compared to the pre-plant guys with the same yields.  Time can be a crunch when we are trying to sidedress, spray make hay and sometimes finish planting beans at the same time but there have also been several years when we have been planting while other guys were trying to finish up their pre-plant NH3 so they could start planting.
