If you decide to build I would stay at the 600 sows or less and you say you have a large land base then you can spread the risks by selling cash grain too. Building a hog barn of any type with thoughts of re-selling it down the road doesn't matter much as in 10 yrs. unless you are in Perth cty. barns will not have much value. A good friend went too 1,300 sows 10 yrs. ago so it would sell better and then in 2008 took sow buy out and barn has been empty since. Age,labor and animal rights and regulations will not make hog business easier. Have been in hogs 40 yrs, in Ontario and many guys are asking same question you have. Not many young guys want to do livestock. Now if corn prices drop in 1/2 a lot will change . If any can compete it will be land based (owned ,not rented ) farrow-finish farms. SEW and finisher guys are about gone. Good luck on your decision
