Subject: RE: Quickbooks or Farmworks?

West Union, Illinois

Comparing QB to FW is kind of like comparing a PC to a Mac.  Both will get you to the same place but how they do it will be vastly different.

I've never  used QuickBooks, but have years of experience with Quicken.  It's a love/hate thing. I love how Quicken works, I hate some of Intuit's "better ideas". They want to provide me with bells and whistles and other needless features .. and I have to upgrade to a newer version every time I change computer operating systems. I assume QB will be similar. It will work great and frustrate yo no end at the same time.

I used Farmworks FarmTrac for several years.  It is great, but like anything else, nothing is perfect.  As was mentioned, when a field was not completed in one day it required guessing or lying to the computer.  Perhaps with GPS tracking things it would not be a problem but I did not have that capability at the time. I did add the ability to use an iPaq for data entry and it worked fairly well.

I decided I wanted to upgrade my financial record keeping and bought FarmFunds.  The only way to make it work was to totally change how we did things ... and I was not willing to do that. In fact, at the time dad was still alive and we were farming together.  There was no way to integrate his bookkeeping system and FarmFunds.  Unfortunately, the program was so integrated it messed up my FarmTrac as well. It sat unused for a couple years.

About a year ago my wife said she wanted to get more involved in the office, so we decided to give it another try.  We attended a FarmWorks training school. The program had been updated and revised and improved since I had quit using it.  They did a good job of explaining it and how to use it. We came home and talked about it and came to the conclusion that for how we were set up and what we were doing the return was not worth the time investment.

I have a neighbor who uses it and just loves it.  He thinks FarmWorks is great.  Well, that was what he said a year or two ago.  I haven't discussed it since he started farming in partnership with a neighbor.  I suspect it did not integrate well with the change in operation.

Farmworks is good, but you may have to make some changes to fit how it does things.

We have looked at other programs over the years.  I remember names like FarmBiz, PCMARS,  Redwing, FBS, ... I 'm sure there are others.  Here are few links to home pages you may want to ponder on.  Some if not all will provide demo's

http://www.farmbiz.com (I really like how they demo the program, see http://www.farmbiz.com/evaluation.htm)

http://www.iowafarmbusiness.org/pcmarsaccounting.html (demo at http://www.iowafarmbusiness.org/PcMars/Info&Demos.htm)

http://www.redwingsoftware.com (they offer a free 1 hour online demo! http://www.redwingsoftware.com/rwssn/?Page=308)

http://www.fbssystems.com/ (demo page at http://www.fbssystems.com/download/demodriver.htm#)

I would suggest the first step is talk to your accountant.  See what they are familiar with and recommend.
