You just dont get it do you.

The number of kernels is not that important, unless it becomes extremely low. You are not gonna lose 13% (14/16) of your yield potential cause hybrid x had 16 kernel rows last year and only has 14 this year. Its the weight of the kernels that matters. Your kernels will weigh more if you have a good fertility program, have adequate late season water, have plants that are still alive at black layer, have plants that are free of disease. I had corn that was making a bushel as low as 60,000 kernels last year. In 2013, when we got hammered by late drought some of those same hybrids were making a bushel around 100-110,000.


If all that matters is the number of kernels then I should be getting the same yield year over year, and I should get more yield as I increase population, but that is simply and totally UNTRUE. Different hybrids will make a bushel at all different kinds of kernel counts.
