While it is true that the corn plant will compensate by making heavier kernals I'm not sure that it can completely replace ear length and number of kernals. If the plant could simple compensate with larger heavier kernals why the emphasis on higher populations. I remember a few years ago when I had a good but lower stand of corn, 22K and an excellent growing year. The kernals were huge but the yield wasn't that great. On the other hand, I've seen some fields with a too high population and shorter ears really yield.
