Not a parent, so can't help from that perspective, but one small thought, as a kid I had a thing for farm equipment brochures (still do at 25, lol ) and I enjoyed reading them.

IMO a very easy way to stay on task without even trying, and making it fun an educational for father and son.

IDK if its gone to crap like other shows these days, but I was a Sesame Street baby and IMO that along with mom reading to me lead to me being a good reader.

Another thought, if he enjoys the equipment, get him to read the safety decals, control labels, etc.

I think it was mentioned above, Hank the Cowdog was a good book series. Maybe hold back the one about the psychotic one eyed horse who wanted to kill everyone.... that one freaked me out a little. :) But Hank is like the Dog version of Chuck Norris, so badassery triumphed evil as usual in that one.....
