I call BS on this statement---------the program when I was a kid was the flash cards with the words on them were of the grade level of the child and you practiced the words until you got the small book to read that introduced the words you had just learned. After time of doing this word recognition as well as the ability to sound out the words come fairly natural.
We are talking the second grade not War and Peace or some other novel
Say what you want, I learned phonics, my kids, and my grand kids as well. ALL of us read well above our grade level, which translates into accelerated learning in all other school subjects.
My Grand daughter is in 2nd grade, she STARTED 2nd grade reading at a 6.1 grade level. Listed below is her 2nd grade reading test
Grade level - 6.1
words per minute - 198
reading comprehension - 96
word power - 99
writing - 100
BTW my brothers and I read the encyclopedia for fun, I read nearly every book in our school libraries ( read 3-4 books every week) on top of the required school reading. |
