Subject: RE: Mount St. Helens day........

NW Washington
I remember it well. We lived in N Idaho between Moscow and Lewiston and we got about a half inch of ash. It was a weird day, we did not have a radio or TV on that day and did not hear the blast. Then in the afternoon it started to get dark, street lights came on and the riding horses pastured near our house started to act crazy. Then the ash started falling like snow. We had family gathering near by and we drank quite a few beers watching the whole thing happen. The ash is very abrasive and it can really wear out things like combine concaves and rub bars. And vehicle engines. I heard a CIH tech rep once bragging about how long the concaves and rub bars would last in an Axial Flow combine, but then he stopped and said, but in the Pacific NW they won't last one season. Lot of hard chrome wear parts are used in this area.
But this was not the first time this area was covered in ash and you can sometimes find layers of it when digging or taking deep soil samples.

Later. Here a reprint of a Spokane WA newspaper article about the Mt St. Helens blast in 1980. https://www.inlander.com/spokane/remembering-the-may-18-1980-eruptio...
