southern MN | When I drove a tractor home 120 miles I took the back roads, much less stressful.
When I pulled a 6 bottom plow home 70 miles I took the back roads, but it was much more important to find wider back roads, worst was narrow blacktop with poor or no shoulders. Gravel was far better.
In your case, you are dealing with height, I think the main roads will have a better chance of having the height you need.
I drove down the highway here once, 20 miles, going through one town there were branches on the street. Out in the country there were even a couple groves where some fresh twigs were down. Odd.
Got to the next town and a semi was pulled over with a disk on it. A trooper was looking things over.
We have a police scanner, I got to hear about it for some time on the scanner, no one had a tape measure, had to get another trooper. His load was 17 feet 3 inches if I remember right. They were not happy. They had to get city crew out to clean up the streets. He was from North Dakota.
Minnesota is really stuck on that 13 feet 6 inches.
