You are taking a good approach to do some sightseeing along the way to break up the trip. For me Yellowstone is a work in progress as we have been there three times over the last 10 years and no trip has been the same. Always something different to see or do each time. Staying in the park is the best option when at Yellowstone otherwise to much time is killed on the road(and expect some roadwork). It is best to get out early in the park especially for the popular stops. As the day goes on the park becomes that much more crowded and there will be a lot of people that can try your patience. Cody, Jackson Hole, Grand Tetons, Beartooth Pass are just a few of the attractions outside the park that are all part of the experience.
