Get your reservations now, it may already be too late. If you can find a place to stay inside the park it will save a couple hours per day of driving. I think 3 days would be the absolute bare minimum to see the park.

Cody Wyoming is a great stop, easy to spend a couple days there, especially if you like guns and western history.
