My parents had more manual labor for sure. They were busy but they also had time to be neighborly.

Financially or economically, I would say they may have had it a little easier. Now, we handle so much money and on fairly thin margins. So they had a little less stress that way but they didn't have crop insurance or other ways to fall back on. But, they made it work. I'd say the same concerns for risk was just as much 50 years ago as it is now.
As far as my classmates, or anyone with a steady job, they have the security of a paycheck but not the flexibility of being your own boss. I do like being my own boss. But with that comes stress that I don't have a steady paycheck to fall back on. But that steady job can be a stress either by possibly losing your job if the business you work for shuts down. You may have too miss some family events because you have to be at a job. And just working days when you would rather just not be doing that.
