I like your last sentence. We're trying to find longer rotations so less fallow but to raise good winter wheat, fallow ahead of it seems the best option. Once you have good wheat stubble then you set yourself up for better corn or sorghum for a year or two following.
How are you extending your rotation? Doing row crops back to back or planting wheat behind row crops? Or possibly even a grazing forage?
