North Dakota | Did you do chem fallow or tillage fallow? As far as I understand it, tillage mineralizes soil organic matter into more readily plant-available forms of nutrients. SARE's guide on cover crops claims that canola is quite good at scavenging for potash, but that would probably be negated if you're harvesting it for grain and not just as a cover. Last year we planted hrsw to a field we did summer tillage fallow on in 2019, and it produced a very clean, high tw, high protein sample. It's not as good for the cash flow as having a grain crop every year, but it was nice to look at. | |
