In our area (I’m northwest of you in Kansas.). Fallow will store some moisture. Break disease cycles. And release some nutrients. But it leaves soil more prone to erosion and degrades the soil especially organic matter. It’s not real efficient at storing moisture and is expensive. I figure a chem fallow season costs at least $60/ acre. You might think you can do tillage fallow for less. Maybe but if you count machinery depreciation and replacement cost and labor I think it is not much cheaper. Long term IMO productivity increases as fallow decreases. The downside is when we don’t get that last rain that is needed to finish making the crop
Is that $60/acre with custom spraying and land rent, or is that just for the price of chemical, machine, and diesel? |
