We have been chopping some wheat for growing calves. Chopping just before it heads out. I can't get protein any better than 12%. Have tried putting a legume in with it but the wheat kinda shades it out. Had decent clover in it last year but didn't help protein much. This is soft red winter wheat drilled first of October and chopped about may 10th. We grow a normal crop of corn or beans after it. Been getting about 7 ton per acre.

This has been closer to my experience of 10 years of srw. 13.5 protein 7 ton @ 60-65%. Palatability is always great even if headed out or laying in rain for a week. Crimson grows nicely with it but I've quit because of having to spray for winter annuals. Never saw a increase in feeding value from crimson. Ryegrass can be a nice mixture with srw if it doesn't winterkill.
