for a round metal stock tank, we have a 15 or 30 gal barrel cut in half with some sort of big cast weight like the slab wheel weights tied to the barrel. We drop that in and then burn hedge firewood in it. Its worked for 30+ yrs for us. Probably could be refined a bit to be more efficient but that hasn't reached priority status on the list of things to do.
