Subject: RE: Break even on a bred heifer

Eastern NC
My penciled break even is right around $700 USD ($910 CAD), but also not blessed to be running cattle in a pasture rich area. That’s for a 600 lb weaned calf, taking into account creep feeding as well.

Using those numbers and a 5% mortality rate(entire lifetime group average, so over I’d hope 10 years) and 5% fallout rate on an annual basis, I’d say that you would have approx 45% of the original group of Breds at 11 years old. Depending on where you are, that could be aggressive as well.

If my cowboy math is correct, that means breakeven increases by another approx $50/calf.

Breakeven on that $2500 USD heifer would be her 3rd calf for me.

Interestingly enough, the dairy guys that I deal with always say 3rd lactation is the profit maker.
