In addition to my original post.. I have $2000 into my bred heifers including purchase cost breeding fees and feed. I figure if she weaned me an average calf 2 years in a row and then came up open and I sold her I would be close to break even. At $3000 I'd probably be 4 years to get to the same point. I am starting to think cows are my best tax write off and I should break more hayland and put it back into grain, I have no big dreams of growing my herd anymore than it is. Now back in 2015 and 2016 I had other ideas! lol
