I'm going through the same thing. My chute and alley are under a lean-to on rock, and I'm removing them to put concrete under them. While I'm at it, I want to add a scale somehow.

By the time I spend the money it costs to add a scale under the chute, I am wondering about buying a pen scale instead. I think I might use it more if I don't have to catch in the chute every animal just to weigh it. I've got room to add a weigh pen between the alley and the holding pens.

I have been looking at Cattle Scales.com and my favorite, Central City Scales.
Let us know what way you decide to go, pen scales intrigue me.

I think pen scales would be alright. Even weighing individual animals.

Run the first animal in the pen. Write down the weight then add the next one. Write down the weigh and repeat. Cattle will stay calmer over the whole group this way. First one in and the last one to go in will be the most anxious.
