Baling is a wash you say, heavy tillage would cost him more to get the same effect? So he’s coming out ahead but coming out even.
If you are in a heavy soil the small loss of organic matter for a few bales of course stalks doesn’t matter very much, would be nice to get it back as manure now and then but still not a big deal.
In light soil or a southern hot climate would be a little different perspective.
I can sure see it his way in the right conditions.
