After several favorable comments on Altrua (health share), we signed on with them in 2018. Fast forward to October 2019 and wife has pancreatitis. After a few days in local hospital getting nowhere, she is sent on to a regional hospital that thinks they know the problem and they did-gall bladder needed to come out to stop pancreatitis. No options to shop around, needed to come out as soon as pancreatitis settled down. Regional hospital said they don't accept health shares. They did the work and got my wife fixed up. Got a bill from hospital within a couple of weeks of dismissal with a substantial cash discount. By this time, Altrua is starting to get hit with claims. I call them and ask about paying the bill. They said not to as they will negotiate that. That started 10 months of utter frustration. Seems like they couldn't get claims from our email address or misplaced them. Things got passed around between offices but never making any progress on anything. They ended up demanding my wife's complete medical history which has nothing to do with her gall bladder. Our local Doctors could not figure out why the need for the medical records going back 20+ years. After months of their harassment towards us, they did manage to pay a portion of the bills but not what their plan stated they pay. I had called them when my wife was in regional hospital to make sure everything was in the clear since we couldn't preauthorize any of this due to the emergency of the deal. I was assured it would be covered.
Sure glad I didn't pay the bill as a 10 month wait would have but a big dent in the cash flow for the year.
