North Central Illinois
On that thought, I want to be greedy and would like to harvest the alfalfa. With a mower on the right tread width spacing, plant 4 rows and skip 4 on 36-38" rows (or 6 and 6 on 30"). Merge swaths into the skip. Probably better to just shred with a stalk chopper.

Maybe do the plant 6, skip 6 system and shred the planted areas. Come back and cut the skips with a self propelled swather. Next season put corn in those and beans in the old corn strips.
