If you go for it asap you can disk 2x now, then get some oats on it, and maybe a few radishes or other brassicas, might be able to sneak peas in with it too, but they won't grow as much, maybe could try winter peas in the mix. Oats and most brassicas should winterkill there in MI and give a bit more soil structure going into early winter, then only need to lightly work again in the spring.

"Here" Alfalfa can really take off in the spring, and a wet spring can make it challenging to terminate without taking a cutting off first.
