I have a few troughs in smaller pen areas but 99% of the time they go on the ground. You have to be flexible here because of terrain. I don't want cows running from over a mile away to get fed. They waste very little as long as I can find a hard spot when it's muddy. I prefer piles over lines but we have feeders that do both.
