NEMO | When cold water is added to a red hot crown sheet it causes a flash steam situation that increases the boiler pressure so rapidly that the pop off safety valve can't exhaust the pressure fast enough to avoid a boiler failure.
Crown sheets actually have a soft plug that are designed to melt the center out when not covered with water and in theory exhaust steam into the firebox putting out the fire.
