mn | Funny, I just watched a 3 minute video on that exact train. Came up in suggested videos on YouTube.
Apparently the theory is that they were running the boiler low on water to generate more heat to go up a grade. It got too low causing the crown sheet to get red hot. The engineer panicked and gave it a bunch of water which caused the explosion. Apparently it did blow up the firebox also. I'm guessing the force of the superheated steam went both ways causing what you see.
