The old appliances had basic switches, timers, thermostats, etc that could be repaired with basic skills, a screwdriver and socket set. Appliances didn't have cool LCD displays, bluetooth and wifi technology. They washed and dried clothes or kept food cold.
In 1970, the cost of a washing machine was equal to 8% of average annual earnings. Today it's just 1.5%. Manufacturers, increasingly design low-cost products to be disposable rather than repairable.
