I often find that it is a lot easier to get things going if the pile is pretty compacted. A hand stacked brushpile is almost always a little too loose to get a hot one going for me. Smashing them down with a loader or a dozer really helps. Even at that, I have rotten luck burning green. A year later they will burn down to ash and very easily.
