Chaffee, Western New York | I was in the same situation. Not big enough to justify a good diskbine but unable to find something that would get me through those 20 without a breakdown.
The drum mowers are primitive. Usually belt drive. The ones I looked at before giving up on hay could have been built with standard Granger components and a 110v mig welder. Also why the only people selling them are not typical Ag dealership.
The reason I thought of a drum is the light weight for going through waterways, low cost for new (I was looking at $3k maybe they are a lot more now.) Cutting capacity is somewhere between a sickle bar and a disk, probably closer to the sickle.
