Subject: RE: Gasoline engine in a combine

Faunsdale, AL
First self propelled combine here was a JD 95b with the JD gasoline inline 6 cylinder. It got converted to LP really quickly. Much better to let pressure differential “pump” the fuel up to the tank that sat up on top behind the engine. Plus you always had a way to blow out the air filter and radiator every morning!

We had/have a 250 gallon tank on a two wheel cart to take to the field. That came about from the 2 G’s and the LEROI 4 cylinder that blew silage that all ran on LP so the LP combine fit right into that system.

I remember the 95 being very reliable, good starter. In fact I cranked it up to pull it out of the shed to scrap it after it had been sitting probably 10 years. Put a battery in it, turned the tank valve on and it cranked right up. But it would only idle. I figured it was something to do with the LP but soon discovered a spring in the governor was broken. Had to have someone work the throttle by hand and another to drive it out!
